Acclimation is a mechanism by which individuals can shift their thermal window of performance through changes in the functional capacity of all levels of biological organization (reviewed in Kassahn et al., 2009; Hofmann and Todgham, 2010), providing ectotherms with some degree of independence from the far-reaching effects of temperature. Two distinct types of response are reversible acclimation and developmental acclimation.
