Today we know that there really are no ghosts or witches, but many years ago in ancient England, people believed in ghosts, and they were afraid of evil spirits. They were also afraid of the coming of winter because they thought it was a time of evil and darkness. The month of October comes just before winter, and during this month the people of ancient England used to light big fires on the tops of the hills. They thought the bright fires would scare away the evil and darkness. The English, Irish, and Scottish people also wore strange clothing and made themselves look like evil spirits so that the real evil spirits would not hurt them.
