1. The first thing to do is to familiarize yourself with what your school district
has to offer in the area of assistance for teachers with non English-speaking
students in their classrooms. (It’s a good idea to do this before you have a student
for whom you will require this kind of help.) Most districts have a bilingual
department that connect teachers with someone who can assist them. You
need to be especially concerned about communicating with the parents, and
your school or school district should provide you with someone who can talk to
the parents in their native language.
