Issued by the United States Social Security Administration, the social security number (SSN) is a means of registering an individual for certain federal benefits, such as for taking part in government service, tracking an individual's employment history and tax contributions. Composed by nine numbers, the first three numbers of a SSN number are the zip code of the relevant application since 1972, the middle two ranging from 1 to 99 in optional order are known as group number, and the last four numbers are the serial number which can range from 0001 to 9999. People could identify a person with the area, group and serial number which contain the whole SSN.
