1919 it was officially illegal in the United States to sell, manufacture, or distribute alcohol. Americans who liked to tip the bottle did not agree with this. So, many of them created alcohol illegally. An example of this illegal booze was called moonshine. The people who made or distributed liquor illegally were called bootleggers. Now even though they were making booze, they couldn't just sell it on the streets. So, over time, places called speakeasies started to pop up around America. A speakeasy is an illegal liquor store or an illegal nightclub. Speakeasies came in all kinds of disguises, some even looked like funeral homes. To gain enter to the speakeasy, you often had to give a special knock, handshake, or password. Once you gianed access, it was the center of relaxation and fun. You would see many aspiring jazz stars lighting up the bar with soothing music, and lots of people dancing and having good, clean, illegal fun. However, you can't have the bar without the booze. Bootleggers were some of the most popular people at this time. They were the only source that clubs could get liquor from. They either smuggled into cities or manufactured it on their own. These bootleggers were very brave, they faced the chance of getting arrested. As did everyone that attended a speakeasy. Finally in 1933 everything went back to normal when the 21st amendment was passed and liquor was legal again.
