I meet with the groups at the mid-way point in the semester to see how things are
going, and the final class period involves the presentations of the completed projects.
I do not do any traditional lecturing, and no part of the grade comes from exams or
quizzes. Nor am I the only source of feedback. The project liaisons are giving the students
feedback throughout the course (including an assessment of their mid-term and
end-of-term project status reports). As mentioned earlier, the students present their
completed projects to the board of directors of the non-profit, and that presentation is
done at a separate time from when they present the project to the class. Previous
research has shown that when students receive quality feedback, receive feedback
from a variety of sources, and are encouraged to seek feedback, they are more likely
to attain the goals of the service learning project (Subramony, 2000).
