The Healthcare Team Vitality Instrument (HTVI) measures team vitality with an emphasis on dimensions related to front-line staff empowerment and engagement, perception of a work environment supportive of safe and high-quality patient care, effective communication, and team collaboration. The HTVI was initially developed to assess team vitality of nurses and other personnel working on inpatient medical-surgical units. The tool has been adapted based upon validation research.
Background
The Healthcare Team Vitality Instrument is a short survey used to assess team vitality of nurses as well as other licensed and unlicensed staff working as part of health care teams on inpatient hospital units. The HTVI was initially developed for repeated, regular measurement to assess the impact on staff vitality of changes tested in the Transforming Care at the Bedside initiative. Other available instruments assess various characteristics of registered nurses or perceptions about and characteristics of the organizations in which they work, but not these factors in combination with critical factors of interdisciplinary team functioning and collaboration.
This tool has been used in inpatient hospital settings, primarily on medical-surgical units participating in the Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) initiative, the IHI Transforming Medical-Surgical Care Learning Community, and the AONE TCAB initiative.
