Sleep disturbances in the elderly can have significant health consequences. Insomnia can result in decreased quality of life, mood changes, decreased concentration, impaired memory, increased falls and accidents, and heightened risk for morbidity and mortality (Ayalon et al., 2004). In persons with dementia, severe sleep disturbance may lead to nursing home placement (Neubauer, 1999).Despite its potentially negative impact, patients often fail to report insomnia to their doctors. Data suggest that health care providers must ask patients about sleep because the patient often does not initiate the discussion (Ayalon et al., 2004).
