The results indicated in Fig. 4 show that municipal
solid wastes generated per capita in Romania register a
maximum in 2008 (411 kg/capita), followed by a period
in which the values are in decline due to socio-economic
factors like population dynamics (population in decline) and
financial issues due to the economic crisis with effects in
2009–2013 (approximately 270 kg/capita). Also, the European
MSW average shows a decline most probably caused by the
economic crisis, but also due to new developed strategies for
reducing, reusing and recycling materials and energy. MSW
generated per capita in Romania represented 67% of the
amount corresponding to the same indicator in EU in 2004,
reaching in 2013 a percentage of 56%.
