Usingcentrifugalelectrospinning,aroll-to-rollprocesswasestablishedforproducingultrathin nonwovenmeshesofrecombinantspidersilkapplicableinfinedustfiltersystems.TheadvancedCES devicecombinesanelectricalandacentrifugalfieldwithanairstream,enablingefficientproduction ofspidersilknanofibersataproductionratethatisupto1000timeshigherthanthatoftraditional spinningmethods.FibersspunusingthisCEStechniqueshowedasignificantlyhigherβ-sheetcontent thanthosespunusingneedle-basedelectrospinning,indicatinggreatermechanicalandchemical stability.Therefore,nopost-treatmentwasnecessary,whichalloweddevelopmentofaroll-to-roll process.Finedustfiltrationtestsofspidersilkmeshesproducedwithsuchasetuprevealedfilter efficiencies(PM2.5)andqualityfactorssignificantlyhigherthanthoseofacommercialfiltersystem, openingtheroadtowardsapplicationsinscale-upprocesses.
