Finally, some reports cite consumption directly on a fuel per
ft3 of wood removal basis CORRIM (2004). For example, in
western Douglas Fir consumption is reported as 0.018 gal diesel/
ft3 (2.46 L/m3
) of wood removal during regeneration harvests
and 0.025 gal/ft3 (3.29 L/m3
) are required during thinning
operations. The greater fuel use during thinning results from the
need to drive around standing trees. These estimates indicate that
for a 70-year-old Douglas Fir stand that contains 10,000 ft3
/acre
(700 m3
/ha) of standing timber a clearcut operation would
consume 246 gal (931 L) of diesel fuel. To convert fuel use to C
emissions conversion factors are required (Table 2)
