The district informed parents about the new report cards over a local cable channel and presented to be pleased with the format was discussed. Teachers expected parents to be pleased with the additional information provided to them, but they found that some parents objected with what they regarded as the more “objective” assessments previously in use. Some accused the district of using grades to evoke a “feel-good mentality,” and others objected to giving grades for speaking and listening, which they considered to be nonacademic skills [Olson, 1995].
