At present, the majority of EDCs in Europe is still opting for a location in the
Benelux region or northern France, but more and more regions are vying for a
position as attractive location for RDCs and potentially EDCs. In Europe, inland
distances are somewhat shorter, so maritime containers tend to move directly to
their destined distribution centers through inland ports. In North America, gateway
distribution centers are dominantly around the Los Angeles/Long Beach, New
York/New Jersey and Savannah clusters. In spite of the similarities that Fig. 10.9
suggests, there are notable particularities in North American and European freight
regionalism, beginning with customization.
