The Pawnee are a Midwestern Native American tribe from the Great plains whose territory consisted of Nebraska and central Kansas. They are federally recognized as the Pawnee nation, now headquartered in Oklahoma. Pawnee people refer to themselves in their Indigenous Caddoan language as Pani or Paneassa which translates into Split Horned-ones referring to their traditional shaved hairstyle which was stiffened up into a mohawk.
