Faucitana et al. (1998) surveyed four commercial pig abattoirs, two of which used the Midas Stunning System (chest belt with an automatically applied, head only electrical stunner, followed by head-to-chest electrical stunner) and two of which used a Compact Carbon Dioxide Stunning Unit (filled with 83% CO2) and reported that the higher degree of muscle activity during the epileptic attack of electrically stunned pigs compared to gas-stunned pigs led to a higher incidence of PSE meat in their carcasses. The Faucitano et al. (1998) results agreed with the findings of Barton-Gade (1993) who observed an increased incidence (10 to 19%) of PSE in plants equipped with electrical stunning than in plants using CO2 stunning (PSE incidence of 2 to 6%).
