This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of mangosteen peel and garlic
powder supplementation on intake , digestibilitั, ruminal fermentation and methane
production in beef cattle steers fed on rice straw based diets . Four,2 year old rumen
fistulatedcrossbredbeefcattlewererandomlyassignedina44 Latinsquaredesignto
receivefourdietarytreatments;mangosteenpeelpellet(Mago-pel),mangosteenpeel
with garlicpowderpellet(Maga-lic),mangosteenpeelpelletwithureaandgarlic
powder(Maga-ulic)supplementedat200g/h/dandnon-supplementedgroup(control).
All animalswerefedwithricestraw ad-libitum while concentratewasfedat0.5%body
weight(BW).Itwasfoundthatsupplementationofmangosteenpeelandgarlicwithor
withoutureahadnoeffectondailyfeedintake(FI),digestibilityofdrymatter(DM),
organicmatter(OM)andcrudeprotein(CP).Supplementationresultedinsignificantly
lower overallNDFandADFdigestibilitywhencomparedwiththecontrol.RuminalpH,
concentrationofruminalNH3–N andbloodureanitrogen(BUN)concentrationswere
not significantlydifferentamongtreatments.TheproportionofC2andmethanewere
decreased,whileC3proportionwasincreasedbythesupplementation.Itwasfound
that allsupplementedtreatmentshadnoeffectson Ruminococcusalbus, Fibrobacter
succinogenes and Ruminococcusflavefaciens populations(P40.05), whereastotal
bacteriaandtotal methanogens populationswereaffectedbysupplementation
(Po0.05).Totalbacteriawerethehighestincontrolgroupandlowestwhensupple-
mentedwithMago-pelandMaga-lic.Thetotal methanogen populationswerethe
highestincontrolgroupandwassimilarwithMago-pelsupplementation.Supplemen-
tationofMaga-licandMaga-ulicresultedinlowerpopulationwhencomparedtothe
controlgroupandalsowithMago-pel’ssupplementedgroups
