Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, the northwest-southeast extending arm of the Mediterranean Sea. The IstriaPeninsula is located in the northern Adriatic between the Gulf ofTrieste in the north and the Bay of Kvarner in the south (Fig. 1a).The area of Istria lies predominately in Croatia, but is also sharedwith Slovenia and Italy. The coast of the Istria Peninsula is generallyrocky with a tidal range of about 1.2 m.
