Pinterest. It's the new game on the block, the new flavor of social media marketing. For those of you who haven't yet discovered it's allure, Pinterest consists of a series of "pin up" boards where you can collect pictures and content and categorize it and pin it for others to follow and discover. It's kind of like Stumble Upon and Digg, but in a very visual way. It's become very popular suddenly with over 5 million users and a population that is growing daily!
You may have noticed people on Facebook or Twitter mentioning Pinterest. Good reason - you can link your accounts. This is a very clever move that gets a ton of exposure and visibility and in my opinion, has added to the mystique and allure and rapid adoption of the Pinterest platform.
So, how does it work? You can install a "pin it" interface to your browser, then when you see something you like, you can pin that directly to one of your boards. The social media aspect of Pinterest is that you can chose to follow other's boards and your friends or business associates can chose to follow your boards. Add to this the ability to "tag" people and add comments and you have a very busy environment. You can also "repin" posts from someone else's board if you love it!
Using Pinterest for social media marketing can be a great way to garner more traffic. In fact, in January 2012 more people visited websites from Pinterest the combined traffic from LinkedIn, Google Plus, Reddit, and Youtube!
Understanding about how Pinterest can help or hurt your social media marketing plan and search engine optimization plan may lead to changes in how your business marketing is implemented.
