Methane and methanol were the only substrates utilized by strains MP1T and 12. Methanol supported growth in a wide range of concentrations,upto5%(v/v);themostactivegrowthwithaspecificgrowth rate0.185±0.006h−1 occurredatamethanolconcentrationof1.0% (v/v). Continuous sub‐culturing of these strains on methanol, however, was not feasible. No growth was observed on multicarbon compounds tested (ethanol, glucose, acetate, pyruvate, malate, succinate, and citrate). Nitrate, nitrite, ammonium chloride, and urea were used as sources of nitrogen.
