Introduction
Most higher plants have two major developmental phases,
i.e. a vegetative phase and a reproductive phase. Leaves and
fl owers are produced one after another throughout development.
In Arabidopsis ( Arabidopsis thaliana ), rosette leaves
initiate during the vegetative phase, while cauline leaves and
fl owers develop during the reproductive phase. The morphological
and physiological traits of the successive organs
vary in association with shoot maturation. The morphological
change is easy to recognize in leaves. The fi rst two leaves
of Arabidopsis have rounded lamina with smooth margins
and long petioles, whereas leaves in later stages have oval
lamina with serrated margins and short petioles ( Röbbelen
1957 ). In addition to leaf shape, trichome distribution
promoter-binding protein-like ; Ws , Wassilewskija ; WT ,
wild type.
