The "oral-gesture theory" proposes an extremely specific connection between physical and oral gesture. it is claimed that originally a set of physical gestures was developed as a means of communication. Then a set of oral gestures, specifically involving the mouth, developed, in which the movements of the tongue, lips and so on were recognized according to pattern of movement similar to physical gestures. you might think of the movement of the tongue in a goodbye message as representative of the waving of the hand or arm for a similar message. This proposal, involving what was called "a specialized pantomime of the tongue and lips. by sir richard paget, does seem a bit outlandish now.we can, indeed, use mime or specific gestures for a variety of communicative purposes, but it is hard to visualize the actual'oral' aspect which would mirrir many such gesures.
