Firefighters battled overnight to control a blaze at an old garbage dump in Ayutthaya province’s Tha Rua district, and were continuing to monitor the smoking rubbish heap on Monday
The fire began around 9pm Sunday in an old, isolated seven-rai dump site in tambon Salaloi of Tha Rua district, district chief Vithit Pinnikorn said.
He said at least 10 fire trucks and 100 firemen and volunteers battled the blaze, and it took them almost the whole night to bring it under control. The fire covered about one rai of the dump site. As of Monday morning, the flames were out but smoke was still handing over the site, which was still being monitored in case the fire rekindles.
There were no reports of injury. It was believe the dump ignited spontaneously, caused by accumulated heat beneath the garbage pile. It is an old dump site which has not been used for over a year.
