Lipoteichoic acids are part of the microbial membrane
component; thus, a higher amount is normally detected from
the cell wall fraction. Despite being a membrane component, LTA were also detected in the intracellular and extracellular fractions. It has been reported that LTA are released
spontaneously into the culture medium during growth in the
stationary phase (van Langevelde et al. 1998). The concentrations of cellular LTA have also been reported to be straindependent and growth-associated. In addition, adaptation of
different strains to growth conditions would lead to important
variations of the cellular envelope, and subsequently cause
variations in the amount of LTA produced (Machado et al.
2004)
