Because of the heterogeneity of the sample, a large number of participants reported experiencing var- ious risk factors. In addition to the substantial number of women who were single parents, 44% of women had incomes below the poverty level (based on income and family size as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, 2001), and 62% of women received public financial assistance. In addition, 75% of wom- en reported being a victim of domestic violence at some time during adulthood, with 44% reporting domestic violence during the current pregnancy (as measured by the Severity of Violence Against Wom- en Scales [SVAWS]; Marshall, 1992).
