So what should parents in Asia do? If parents can provide a natural environment to develop multiple language, then this certainly is preferable to having the child learn the language in classrooms at a later age. But for the majority who are unable to provide the conditions for true bilingual development, then perhaps it is advisable for parents to take a more relaxed and realistic approach to developing second language skills in their children. Moderate amounts of exposure to English can be enough to help young children become familiar with the pronunciation of the language, one area where younger children clearly have an advantage over older children. Other language skills can still be will developed after the age of five, and language programmes in secondary schools across Asia are generally improving.
