Once physiological, safety, belonging, and esteem needs are met, people can focus on opportunites for growth and personal achievement. Although Maslow's need theory has received little empirical support, and seems to have little applicability outside of the United States, it continues to be popular in the general management literature in the United States, partially because it appeals to the North American norms of entrepreneurism, independence, and personal achievement.
