The metre of this poem is so very pretty - but isn't it "The Charge of the Light Brigade"? Or is it just me because nobody else seems to have noticed....
In 1917 when it was published a critic said:
"Eve" will live for us all as a thing of truly original loveliness and pathos, though some of us may wish that the exigencies of metre had not compelled her to be invoked in two or three places under the alien form "Eva".
Surely a poet is allowed a little poetic licence? One of the book titles we giggled about in school was "The Busted Window" by Eva Brick. Almost as good as "Eve Draws Down" by Lucy Lastic.
"Eve and the Serpent" 1906 was by Henri Rousseau
"The Serpent Tempting Eve" 1802 was by Henry Fuseli
'Eve tempted by the serpent' 1799 was by William Blake
