Parents and carers were also provided with information about the short- and long-term health benefits of replacing an unhealthy snack with a healthy one. The events were designed to be fun and informal, with a visit from a Banana character, and each child would take home a piece of fruit. They were held in easy- to-access locations (children's centres within the community) and run by staff who the parents and children already knew. In addition, by signing parents up to the Healthy Start voucher scheme, the events offered a financial incentive that made achieving the positive behaviour possible. The immediate benefits of participating in the event were thus clear and appealing to the target audience. Providing each parent with information on a one-to-one basis was essential because of low literacy and numeracy in the target families.
