Turkish forestry has traditionally been administered by organizational structures connected with the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MEF), and nearly all forest lands (20 763 248 ha) belong to the state. Of the total open land space, 27% is covered by forested lands, and all of these state-owned lands have been managed by various divisions within the MEF, as discussed below (Table 1).
