To extract cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from blue agave, acidhydrolysis was performed to the bleached blue agave pulp with stirring at 45 .C into a 10.2M solution of H2SO4 (1:20 w/v) during 120 min; after that, the resulting pulp was centrifuged four times at 8000rpm for 10 min when the supernatant was turbid, the slurry was dialyzed to distilled water until neutral pH was stabilized. To avoid agglomerations, nanocrystal suspension was sonicated in a Elmasonic Elma S 70H sonication bath for 20 min at 25 .C using a plastic recipient (Garcia de Rodriguez et al., 2006). For the cellulose nanofibers (CNF), bleached pulp was first dispersed in a water solution with a 1:10 w/w ratio using an Heidolph Silent Crusher M at 15,000rpm for 30 min, after that they were homogenized with a Niro Soavi NS1001L Panda laboratory homogenizer with 30 passes at ¡1000 bar (Wang et al., 2007).
