2.3. Dance recordings
The dance space was prepared with grey cardboard fixed on the
wall behind the participant to guarantee a uniformly coloured
background and two halogen studio lights (Hedler GmbH,
Germany) provided consistent lighting. The 50 male dancers wore
white overalls to control for a potential influence of clothing style
(see for the same protocol Fink et al., 2007). We recorded 30-s-long
videos using a digital video camera (Sony HDV 1080i/MiniDV, Sony
Corporation). During dance recordings, the participants were alone
in the room except for the experimenter. Each participant danced to
the same pop song of which only the core rhythm (drums) was
presented. This way we attempted to reduce the potential influence
of an individual’s music preferences on dancing expressiveness.
Following recording, only 15 s from the middle of the 30 s video
stream of each participant were isolated and converted to
grey-scale Macintosh QuickTime movies by using Adobe Premiere
(Adobe Systems Inc., San Jose, USA). A Gaussian blurring filter was
applied to the videos to degrade information about the respective
participant’s body shape. This procedure is comparable to the
quantized displays methodology introduced by Berry, Kean,
Misovich, and Baron (1991). Thus the resulting video clips provided
movement information merely through changes in grey-scale
values.
2.4. Dance ratings
A sample of 60 women, mainly undergraduate and graduate
students recruited from the local University, rated the video clips
on a computer screen. Half of the sample (M = 30.03, SD =
3.32 years) judged each dancer on perceived attractiveness. Based
on the circumstance that risk-taking is a correlate of sensation
seeking, the other half of the participants (M = 22.80, SD =
6.64 years) rated each dancer on perceived risk-taking. The
judgements were made on a seven-point Likert-type scale
(1 = low and 7 = high on the attribute). The video clips were
presented without audio, and in a randomized order using the
MediaLab presentation software (Empirisoft Inc., New York, USA).
