Despite these challenges, physical deposition and vacuum methods offer a number of unique advantages. Very thin, fully dense films can be produced on either porous or dense substrates, and can be formed at temperature much lower than those required in traditional ceramic processing, avoiding unwanted interfacial reaction. Physical deposition and vacuum methods are also well suited to the formation of interlayers, where small grain sizes and thin layer thicknesses are required.
