3.2.3. Cell suspension cultures
Calluses obtained from leaf explants in response to 28.9 M
PIC after 60 days of culture in the presence or absence of light
were used for the establishment of cell suspension cultures. The
growth patterns of cultures incubated in both conditions are presented
in Fig. 3. Cell suspensions maintained in the presence of
light entered the exponential phase after three days of culture.
This pattern was maintained until the 10th day, when cultures
reached 3-fold increase on biomass accumulation (Fig. 3a). On the
other hand, cultures maintained in darkness displayed the exponential
phase between days 15 and 20, also with 3-fold increase
on biomass accumulation (Fig. 3b). Following the stationary phase,
cultures showed a decrease in cell density, recorded by both fresh
and dry weights (Fig. 3a and b).
