I doubt he even knew it would be possible. I assume he chose healer as he wanted that class as a way to progress as a solo player

The choice of the healer class was strange, the way he was building him absurd and worked somewhat so far (it was completely absurd of him to fight a duel without a sword in the first place) but it was bound to fail in the end : his damage was falling behind, not high enough to penetrate defense and relying on items (which can be lost in death like happened to him) and his only quality as a healer were his mana recovery items and timing. Even though he was praised has an absurd sword wielding healer, the class change will allow him to become much more terrifying, putting his combat skills to use with actual damage while retaining the ability to use timely heals, combined with a capacity to avoid most hits, and alchemy to fill the mana pool to use his skills at their max efficiency, he will probably end up as a berserker !! And I think a swordsman will have ease to create sword skills recognized by the game than a healer.

So while the change was not explained in any way and can seem abrupt it feels necessary for the character development.
