The daily intake levels of 60 μg of AFB1/kg of feed
can be compared with the contamination level occasionally
found in feeds intended for livestock (Pietri et al.,
2004). It should be noted though, that this level was
higher than levels legally allowed in dairy animal feeds
in Europe (2002/32/CE) and North America (5 and 20
μg/kg of feed, respectively). The absence of effect on
intake, BW, and performance was expected, because
the levels used were well below the lower toxic dose.
The absence of a negative effect was also in agreement
with the literature (Rao and Chopra, 2001; Battacone
et al., 2003).
