As area children head back to school, tonight's Art Moment is Jacob Lawrence's "School Room" from 1943. Lawrence earned high esteem for his compelling scenes of African American history and life. A key scene from Lawrence's Harlem Series, "School Room" shows nine schoolchildren engaged in a variety of classroom activities including reading, writing and asking or answering questions. The large blackboard behind them shows the results of a recent drawing session. Here Lawrence links his own art with the aesthetic pursuits of children, which many modern artists admired for their purity of expression. Lawrence's vibrant, deceptively simple style also incorporated aspects of modern European painting and American folk art.
