This study took place in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area
(‘‘region’’), with a population of about 1.6 million . The City of
Portland (about one third of the population) has received national
attention and awards for its commitment to bicycling . The city
has a relatively high number of bike lanes, compared to other large
US cities . Rates of bicycle commuting are higher in the region
than most comparably sized regions . Yet only about 1.2% of the
region’s and 4.2% of the City of Portland’s workers regularly
commuted by bicycle in 2006 .
