In the past, NOTAMs (Notices to airmen- of temporary changes) have been distributed by fax, internet or AFTN (Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network). Aeronautical charts have always been paper based, and navigation has always been done using ground-based navigation aids. The navigation instruments in the cockpit, always appeared to be complicated, but were actually simple gyroscopic mechanics. Now, NOTAMs have become digital, charts are becoming electronic, navigation is becoming performance based, and has been using global satellite systems, displayed in “Glass Cockpit” (on computer monitors) for a while now. And in the not-too-distance future, air traffic controllers will be using satellite system too, instead of the current ground-based radar –meaning they could traffic from anywhere in the world. This is a study of how the different AIS’s (Aeronautical Information Services) around the world have dealt with these two significant, age-old issues of symbology and scale on both procedure charts and enroute charts.
