5. Conclusions
In order to develop a quality management system, the
performance indicators represent an essential facet of
achieving academic excellence. The essential objectives of
establishing performance indicators are based on the
following factors (Report Board of Education, State of
Illinois, 2001):
• support of the economic growth by means of graduates
with skills and competencies designed to meet the labor
market requirements;
• improvement of research and teaching processes;
• promotion of partnerships between universities;
• increasing access to education;
• the satisfaction of both internal and external customers;
• encourage of excellence and accountability at the
organizational level.
In order to define directions for the formulation of relevant
performance indicators for the education sector, there has
been adopted a system of best practices. Table 2 provides
a set of best practices in order to measure the educational
performance, containing in the same time a brief
description of each indicator.
