We found that the odds for an insurance claim were significantly higher for the Finnish speaking vs. Swedishspeaking fishers. The same phenomenon has been observed among farmers in Finland [5, 13]. It has also beenreported that the Finnish speaking population has higher age-adjusted mortality rates than the Swedish speaking;higher mortality rates were found especially for alcohol related diseases, suicide, and other accidental and violentcauses of death [16]. Contributing factors for this phenomenon have not been thoroughly assessed, but cultural andsocial factors may play a significant role.
