Chapter 3: Handbook-1
I cleared the ashtray, wiped the table clean and packed the discs back into their boxes. I proceeded to his bookshelf to arrange his scripts in chronological order.
As for Papa’s favourite lighter with a snow flake carving on it, I naturally put it back into his drawer.
That was my first time opening his drawer. It was in a complete mess, scattered with pens, eye drops, photos and batteries. But amidst the mess, there was something carefully wrapped with a plastic cover.
It was an old journal.
Unable to contain my curiosity, I opened the Pandora’s Box.
There was a picture pasted on the inner cover of the journal. It was taken at the beach and there were two shirtless youths inside the picture. I recognized Uncle Yamapi, or more affectionately known as Pi, immediately.
Pi is Papa’s best friend till today. He calls Mama “Sister-in-law” and Papa “Hey”. He’s single, and celebrated every New Year together with our family. And without fail, he would tell Papa, “Jin, let Kazumi marry me when she grows up.”
Papa would roll his eyes in response and gave him THE look, “Don’t even dream about it, my Kazumi will not marry a Yamashita.”
Pi is very good-looking. Although he's not young anymore, he remained very popular the industry and would appear regularly on the rankings of “most charming male artiste”. Moreover, Pi doted on me very much. Every year, I got presents from him on Christmas, my birthday and daughters’ day. He attended the fathers’ meeting with my papa too. Even when I brought Uehara home for the first time, I had to pick his free day because he wanted to “take a good look at Kazumi’s boyfriend.”
Pi looked like he was about 17 in the picture. The youth beside him looked slightly younger.
The sea was crystal clear in the background and the sun shone brightly. Pi was hugging the youth and they smiled towards the camera, making a peace sign with their hands.
The youth looked very familiar…. It was only after a while then I realized that he was Kamenashi.
Kamenashi was different from Papa or Pi. Papa was cheerful and Pi was charming, whereas Kamenashi was beautiful. He had a very pretty smile and the way his lips curled up into a pout added a tinge of playfulness to his beauty.
Both Papa and Pi liked him a lot. Kamenashi was well-liked by everyone. Even Papa’s senpais often say “Kame you’re so cute, if you’re free tomorrow, do come and join me in the other recording studio~~”
Kame, that’s what he was affectionately known as.
Kame was still a newbie then. Other than dance classes and two recordings monthly, he didn’t get to go to the TV station very much. However, as he was well-liked by his senpais, he became popular with the media. The crew nicknamed him as ‘Takizawa’s junior’. Papa, who was already quite popular by then, tagged along with Kame and Takizawa too. And not long after, even Pi, who was already in dramas and hosting Shounen Club, became one of Takizawa’s followers as well. The 'following' stopped only when Kame’s workload increased.
Even Mr Shimatani, Papa’s manager for the past 20 years, was unable to fathom why they did that.
