Numbers and Trends
• As the table suggests, Asia & the Pacific is by far the most affected region in the world by absolute numbers
• Despite an estimated 21 million trafficked persons, the US State Department’s TIP report suggests that only 46,570 were identified globally in 2012
• In the same year, only 7,705 alleged traffickers were prosecuted, leading to only 4,746 convictions
• In addition, only 1,153 prosecutions involved trafficking for labour exploitation, and only 518 of the convictions related to trafficking for labour exploitation
