Prior research on the impact of parent–child relationships
on children’s outcomes pointed clearly to gender-specific
effects. The quality of the parent–child
relationship was on average better within same-sex dyads
than within opposite-sex dyads. Moreover, the
consequences of the relationship with the same-sex parent
versus the opposite-sex parent was different. The same-sex
relationship had a stronger impact on adolescents’ well-being than the relationship with the opposite-sex parent.
