SIBU: DAP Sibu stayed out of the S4S (Sarawak For Sarawakians) assembly at Sibu Town Square on Sunday because they felt the gathering which was supposed to be hosted by non-politicians for a noble cause to protect Sarawakians, had been politically hijacked.
DAP Sarawak vice-chairman David Wong, when contacted, told The Borneo Post he was disappointed that an unseen political hand was playing a part.
He said this “political agent” within the movement in Sibu had wanted to kick DAP and other parties out of Sarawak “because they claimed we are the Malayan parties”, adding the organiser carried such placards and banners in the assembly.
“We had already received news before the assembly this would happen. How then could we take part when their aim was to shame us in the gathering? This was deliberately done to slap us on the face.”
In the S4S assembly on Sunday at Sibu Town Square, the organiser held a banner that read `Malayan Parties Out’.
Behind this banner were the logos of 10 West Malaysian based parties, and the DAP logo was one.
Wong was further disappointed because this “political agent” in S4S had listed Sarawak DAP as a Malayan party, whereas their party in Sarawak was formed by Sarawakians fighting for Sarawakians, with DAP branches formed in Sarawak to serve the people of Sarawak.
He questioned whether there was a Barisan Nasional component party hiding in S4S in Sibu.
He said he understood over 60 members of SUPP in Sibu took part in the assembly, but Wong did not hint whether SUPP had caused this row.
“Similar S4S assemblies were held in Bintulu and Miri on the same day, but what had happened in Sibu did not happen in other places? Why only Sibu? Who is behind it?”
Wong said they supported the cause of S4S to create awareness in protecting the rights of Sarawakians.
He said that was why DAP leaders would join the event on July 22 in Kuching to show this support and to mark the Independence of Sarawak.
“In fact, the fight for the rights of Sarawakians is what we have been committed in. This is reflected in our Bintulu Declaration last year as we vowed to fight for the rights of Sarawak, like the education autonomy and other matters listed in our 18-point agreement that led to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.”
Wong was also disappointed because the S4S assembly on Sunday had made it look like Sarawak DAP had caused the suffering of the people when their rights were abused.
“For 52 years, Sarawak has been in the hands of the Barisan Nasional. DAP Sarawak did not cause Sarawakians to be sidelined. It is misleading for what “this political agent of S4S” had created in their assembly on Sunday.”
For DAP Sarawak, he said they would continue fighting for the rights of Sarawakians through DAP’s Bintulu Declaration.
