The invasion of privacy permeating through Kew House affects the user to a point where the master bedroom does not function as it should – as a private retreat – so the small built-in wardrobe becomes the dressing room. To compensate for this design deficiency, Godsell installed adjustable blinds to improve the privacy for him and for the other occupants[46]. This undesired invasion of privacy created by the transparent façade is also reflected in the spatial layout of the floor plan (Seen in diagram 3), which further perpetuates the theatrical experience. The openness of the floor plan blurs the boundaries between the living/dining areas. The extended kitchen/dining bench “Panoptically” views over the lounge and when occupied, it infects a sound and visual “presence” over the living spaces. The provoking sound and visual tension when combined with the theatricality of “being-watched” creates a potent theatrical experience testing the cognitive senses.
