Thomus (1968) have attempted to document the strengths of individual infant behavior in our culture’ and to relate the stability of infant behavior over time to later development. However’ the infant in these studies were first studied at three months. Neonatal observation of the infant and early assessment of their caretakers might have contributed to our understanding of the relative contribution of each to their relationship. By three months a great deal of important interaction has already occurred’ and future patterns may have been established.
