(4) Young people should be treated with respect at all times and
time taken to establish relationships. Continuity of care plays
a very important role in maintaining contact with pregnant
teenagers. This is why many units employ specialist midwives
to care for this cohort of patients.
(5) The approach should be empowering.
Many young people have low self esteem and lack confidence
in making decisions for themselves. As a care provider, it is
important to show belief in them and their ability to develop the
skills to become a good parent.
(6) Accessible information that meets both parents’ needs
should be provided.
Information through various aids, such as e-leaflets, DVDs,
and posters should be offered. The young person’s reading ability
should be sensitively ascertained and the necessary support
offered.
