Lesson COG 49
Task: Name numbers.
Prerequisites: COG 35, S&L 6
Concept: This activity is very similar to the skill of naming letters (COG 45), but it has been drawn out as a separate activity because not only is actual number naming taking place but some initial introduction to numerical sequencing also occurs as a secondary outcome. The specific numbers chosen for this task extend beyond those taught so for in previous counting activities (COGs 35,40, and 41).
Behavioral Objective: When requested to verbally identify a number from 1 to 20 that has been randomly selected and displayed, the student will verbally respond with the name of that number to a. 90% accuracy level for 100 trials.
Materials: Flash cards with the numbers 1 to 20, paper, and various-size markers.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student the ability to identify the numbers 1 through 9 (see prerequisite COG 35). Add to those skills the numbers 10 through 20.
2. Present numbers in order (1-20) and prompt the student to verbally respond as to the name of the number. If the student does not respond, prompt for verbal imitation (see prerequisite S&L 6).
3. Continue Step 2, reducing the verbal prompting to just the first sound of the name of the number.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all prompting until the numerical sequence from 1 to 20 can be named when the flash cards are presented.
5. Modify Step 4 to presenting the numbers in a random manner. Continue until the objective is met.
