Water sample have been collected over the last three years at different sites and under different conditions in Slovenian saltpans (Plate 2). The hypersaline water, with salinities from 15 to 30% and there for previously thought to be too extreme for fungal growth, contained numerous fungi (Gunde-Cimerman et al.,1999). Black yeast-like fungi dominated the flora and were isolated with all methods use; therefor we were confident that they are halotolerant or halophilic.
