ML theory draws on four assumptions (Sullivan, 1988). First, most communication
between leader and member can be described in the three categories named above. Second,
motivating language is considered a form ofpersuasive communication because it is focused on
the interpersonal communication between leader and member. Third, the member understands
the leader's message. Fourth, the leader must utilize all three types of communication at
appropriate times in order to motivate staff while generating trust and loyalty. Sullivan (1988)
stresses that leaders will experience the full benefits ofmotivating language by combining all
three types of language in order to meet the four assumptions of the theory and successfully build
the highest quality leader-member relationship possible.
